Classroom Behavior System: Scholar Dollars

Classroom Behavior System: Scholar Dollars

Our classroom behavior system is Scholar Dollars. At the end of each week, students will have the opportunity to purchase items from the Scholar Store with the dollars they have earned.

Beginning on the first day of school, each student will be given a wallet (a Ziploc bag taped to their desk). It will be the student’s job to earn Scholar Dollars to put in their wallet. Please note, that Scholar Dollars are not real money. They are play money that is printed on green paper.

How does my child earn Scholar Dollars?
• Your child can earn dollars by displaying positive character traits: honesty, respect, kindness, and responsibility. Dollars may also be earned when they are caught doing the right thing and following the school and classroom rules.

Can my child lose Scholar Dollars?
• Yes. Your child can lose Scholar Dollars. When negative character traits are displayed, they can lose Scholar Dollars from their wallet. These behaviors include: dishonesty, disrespect, not following school and classroom rules, and not listening and following teacher’s directions.

What are the consequences of losing Scholar Dollars?
Your child will start fresh each day regarding this list of consequences.
1. One dollar lost is considered a warning. The dollar lost is recorded on their Scholar Dollar Report (more information below).
2. Two dollars lost results in walking one extra lap around the track at recess. The dollar lost is recorded on their Scholar Dollar Report.
3. Three dollars lost results in walking one extra lap around the track at recess and silent lunch.
4. Four dollars lost results in walking one extra lap around the track at recess, silent lunch, and a phone call home.
5. More than four dollars lost in one day will reflect all of the consequences above and may also become an office referral based on the situation.

How will I know how many Scholar Dollars my child is earning and losing each week?
• Each time your child earns or loses a Scholar Dollar, it will be recorded on their Scholar Dollar Report
• The Scholar Dollar report will be sent home in your child’s homework folder the last day of each week.

Please review this report with your child. Please sign this report and return it to school with your child on Monday. Your child will be rewarded one Scholar Dollar for returning their report because they are being honest and responsible for taking it home and returning it to school. The Scholar Dollar Report will be filed for the teacher’s records when it is returned on Monday.

What can my child “buy” with his/her Scholar Dollars?
• Each student will have the opportunity to go shopping at the Scholar Store on Friday afternoon if they have enough dollars to buy something.
• There are three different prices in the Scholar Store: $5 items, $10 items, and $15 items. If your child does not have enough dollars to purchase an item, they may save their money until the next Friday. The decision about whether they purchase an item is up to them. They are giving the opportunity to decide whether they should save their money for something they really want to buy or go ahead and buy something that is less expensive.
• If you would like to donate to our classroom’s Scholar Store, please feel free to do so.

What is the purpose for having the Scholar Dollars classroom behavior system?
1. Students will develop responsibility for their actions.
2. Students will be held accountable for their behavior.
3. Teacher and parents will be able to weekly communicate regarding child’s behavior to see how the week went.
4. Study of the economy is included in the third grade Social Studies curriculum.
5. Helps to create a positive learning environment where positive behaviors are reinforced.
